Composite Fillings are used to fix a number of dental problems, most commonly: Cavities, repairing cracked and broken teeth or to strengthen and reinforce teeth that have been reduced due to teeth grinding and nail biting.
What are fillings made of?
Fillings are a semi-permanent piece of your mouth’s structure, and as a result, it is essential to know what they are made out of, and how that material will affect your body. Traditional amalgam fillings (the silver ones) are made out of a mix of silver, zinc, tin and copper, bonded together with mercury. Although amalgam fillings are more economical and have been around for much longer (150 years), the heavy metals (particularly mercury) used in amalgam fillings make them a serious risk to the contribution of heavy metal poisoning. In contrast, tooth coloured composite fillings are made from a mix of glass and plastic are a much safer alternative. At Junction Dental in Toronto and Scarborough, we use tooth coloured composite fillings on our patients, in order to give them an esthetically superior look, but also provide the best effect to the patient’s overall long term health.
